On a Demining Device Based on the Technique of Neutron Back Scattering in Combination with a Metal Detector
نویسنده
چکیده
The neutron backscattering (NBS) technique is a well established method to find hydrogen in objects. The NBS technique used in demining takes advantage of the fact that land mines contain much more hydrogen atoms than the dry sand in which they may be buried. An advantage of the NBS method is the high speed of operation. A test site has recently become operational in Delft where a NBS imaging detector can be moved over land mines buried in dry sand at speeds up to 1 m/s. First results indicate that anti-tank mines can be found at depths of 20 cm at a speed of 30 mm/s using a Cf source of 5 × 10 n/s. By applying a stronger source or a neutron generator scan speeds of up to 1 m/s are envisaged. Since the speed of operation of a NBS device compares to that of a metal detector the combination of such devices seems obvious. The choice of construction materials however presents problems.

In this report, ultraviolet (UV) detectors were fabricated based on zinc oxide thin films. The epitaxial growth of zinc oxide thin films was carried out on bare glass substrate with preferred orientation to (002) plane of wurtzite structure through radio frequency sputtering technique. The structural properties indicated a dominant peak at 2θ=34.28º which was matched with JCPDS reference card N...

Neutron scattering is proved to be a vital probe in unveiling the magnetic properties of high temperature superconductors (HTSC). Detailed information about the energy and momentum dependence of the magnetic dynamics of HTSC have been obtained directly by this technique. Over the past decade by improving the crystal growth methods, large and high quality single crystals of HTSC, which are ess...
متن کاملBiosensing Based on Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy by Using Metal Nanoparticles
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising tool in the analytical science because it provides good selectivity and sensitivity without the labeling process required by fluorescence detection. This technique consists of locating the target analyte on nanometer range of roughed Au-nanoparticles. The presence of the metal nanoparticles provides a tremendous enhancement to the result...
متن کاملThe effect of source shield on landmine detection
Background: Several landmine detection methods, based on nuclear techniques, have been suggested during the recent years. Neutron energy moderation, neutron-induced gamma emission, neutron and gamma attenuation, and fast neutron backscattering are nuclear-based methods used for landmine detection. The aim of this study is to use backscattered neutron for landmine detection. Materials ...

In this project the neutron spectra from the reaction of deutron on beryllium muclei is measured. The energies of deuterons were 7, 10, 13 and 15 MeV, and these measurements are performed at 10, 30 and 50 degrees relative to the beam of deutrons. The detector used is 76 by 76 mm right circular cylender of NE-213 liquid scintillator. The zero crossing technique is used for gamma discriminatin....
